Japan

Unfortunately, in November we had to announce the passing of friend and colleague Rick Frueh. Rick requested that his ashes be taken to Japan and spread at a temple he had visited and felt a deep connection with. Early last month New Flower’s John Johnson met with piercer Sarvas Berry from Salt Lake City in Tokyo and fulfilled Ricks wish. Some of you may remember Sarvas from his multiple visits to Long Beach to pierce with John at Outer Limits between 2007 and 2010. John and Sarvas served on the APP‘s board of directors with Rick from 2011 to 2014. Below are some images from this trip to Japan.

The trip started in Tokyo.

Halfway between Tokyo and Kyoto is Mt. Fuji. After a lot of travel this was a nice place to stop for the night.

The day Rick’s ashes were spread required a long bus ride up a mountain outside Kyoto to Ohara which is known for it’s old temples.

A small amount of hiking was required to get to the temple complex where buses didn’t reach. Along the way were lots of reminders of the history in this area.

This is the entrance to one of the popular temples.

Although located in a remote area, these temples are still maintained and used for worship and meditation.

Many of the temples in this area have view points for sitting and drinking tea. If you look closely you can see fish frozen in the ice.

Here John and Sarvas sit with tea in a place Rick also sat before and loved.

When the time came, Rick’s ashes were released in this area that will eventually fill with water and become part of the system of streams that wind down the mountain.

Here’s a picture of Rick in Japan in 2016. We were honored to be his friend and to deliver him to his final resting place.
