Piercer Rick Frueh

Rest in Peace Rick
Unfortunately we must say goodbye to another friend from the industry. This time it’s piercer and friend Rick Frueh who will be remembered for owning Industrial Primitives in Austin, TX. However, he spent the last few years piercing at 23rd St Body Piercing in Oklahoma City. Rick Passed away from cancer on October 20th in OKC. Below are pictures of John and Rick together through the years.

Rick and New Flower’s John Johnson have been friends for years and served together on the APP’s board of directors. Rick has Pierced at New Flower on two occasions so some of you are wearing his work.

Above is a picture of them together in Las Vegas as the new procedure manual was being released. The committee Rick led worked on this publication for two years.


Rick and John got their OSHA instructors credentials together at the university of Arlington, TX and above is an image of them teaching a Bloodborne Pathogens course together.

John and Rick took a tour of the Industrial Strength factory together in Carlsbad, CA. Here they are with Jonathan and JD from I.S.

During one of Rick’s visits to New Flower, piercers Brian Oviatt and Chris Glunt met up for dinner.

Rick and John’s terms on the APP’s board ended in 2014. During this period Rick established the largest learning forum for piercing professionals currently online.

John and Rick joined a group of piercers and tattooers for a research project in a top secret location.

John will co-author an article about Rick in an upcoming issue of The Point. It’s never easy to say goodbye to someone you know and love, but we must. Some of you reading this may be wearing piercings he gave you at New Flower or one of the many tattoo conventions he pierced at in Southern California. Piercing was an identity and lifestyle for Rick and he contributed to our craft in ways that will outlive him forever. Please rest in peace friend.

John Johnson

John Johnson is a professional body piercer at New Flower Studio in Long Beach, CA. He’s also a Red Cross instructor and authorized OSHA trainer. He manages the online curriculum for the Association of Professional Piercers and is a member of ASTM International.
