What to do if Your Jewelry Falls Out

by John Johnson
Body jewelry is considered semi-permanent.   Conventional jewelry like bracelets, rings, necklaces, and the common earring can easily be removed at the end of the day or any other time you wish.  Body jewelry isn’t so simple.  The jewelry we wear in piercings is intended to be kept in place and designed for long term wear in most cases.

You may have heard us say at the studio that the only guarantee of keeping your piercing open is the jewelry, and when jewelry comes out for any reason, your piercing may close, or at least shrink enough to make reinsertion difficult.

Our bodies are uniquely ours.  Under identical conditions, different people’s piercings will react differently to jewelry falling out or being removed.  Unless you already know how long you can go without jewelry in your piercing, you need to get it back in asap.  If the jewelry is lost or you’re struggling to get it in place please visit a studio right away.  Professionals can sometimes get jewelry back in with little or no discomfort.  But please don’t delay.  Every minute that turns into an hour gets you closer to the point of no return.  Some clients will wait days unaware that they shouldn’t.

Unfortunately, since we’re all so unique, there’s no way to tell how long any individual piercing can go without jewelry in place.  It doesn’t matter how old a piercing is, the body can be unpredictable, so every second counts.

Studios like ours only sell high quality jewelry for initial piercings made from implant standard materials like Titanium, and Steel.  It would be very uncommon for piercers like us to encourage anyone to wear their old generic jewelry.  However, it may be a fine temporary solution to going any length of time without the jewelry in your piercing if it’s all you have.  For the time being it would simply be a better option if it keeps the piercing open until you can get better jewelry.  Before reinserting old jewelry into your piercing clean it with some soap and water making sure to remove any visible debris.

If you’re visiting the studio with your own jewelry please put it in a bag or other container and let us know what you have when you come in.  If you need to be pierced again we’ll let you know what to expect regarding how long you’ll need to wait before piercing the same spot again, and if it’s even possible.  If you plan on reusing your old jewelry we’ll need to inspect it to make sure that it’s suitable for a new piercing.  If we agree to use it you’ll need to leave if for a couple days.  Jewelry that has already been in your body can not go directly into the sterilizer we use at the time of piercing.  We’ll need to hold on to it for a couple or so days to get your jewelry ready.  You’ll save money if we’re able to use your old piece, but please be patient.
