What Happens if My Body Piercing Jewelry Falls Out?

This image features an ear cartilage piercing. The client is wearing a Neometal brand threadless stud with a 3mm yellow gold CZ gem.

The type of jewelry we wear in our body piercings is semi-permanent. That is to say, we don’t generally remove it, but it isn’t intended to be impossible to remove.

The different types of jewelry we wear will have different types of closure mechanisms such as threaded barbells that require regular tightening to make sure they don’t loosen and disassemble accidentally. Other types of jewelry, like captive bead rings and threadless barbells rely on tension (pressure) to keep the parts together.

No matter what you wear in your piercings, there’s always a chance for jewelry to become disassembled and fall out. This can result in the jewelry being lost, for example, it may fall down the drain. Other times, we might intentionally remove our jewelry, maybe we want to do a thorough cleaning or change what we’re wearing. No matter what the reason we should minimize the amount of time our piercing spends without jewelry. Our bodies can be unpredictable sometimes. The longer we go without jewelry, the closer we get to finding out how long is too long without jewelry in place. We might find a short time was all it took for the piercing channel to shrink to a size that makes installation difficult or painful. In a worst case scenario the surface area inside the piercing channel starts to connect and the piercing officially closes.

If you find yourself without jewelry in a piercing you’ll want to get something installed right away, if you wish to keep the piercing that is. As the seconds turn to minutes, and minutes turn to hours or days, you get closer to the point of no return. The client in the image above lost her jewelry in the sink, but she was quick to install a traditional earring until she could visit us at Black Raven Tattoo where she was originally pierced. Because of this we were able to get a new threadless shaft in her piercing with ease. Also, because she kept her original gold gem-end, she was able to get her piercing back to normal without the added cost of a new top. We’d also like to point out that she was kind enough to place her fancy gold end in a small plastic baggy before she arrived at the studio.
